Alexander Calder started creating Stabiles in the 1930s. These were recognized as variations of his mobiles. The new scultures were free-standing and immobile. Usually large and cunstructed from sheets of metal and bolts. Quite a few examples of "stabiles" can be viewed on-line.
This large stabile is located in Chicago. The bright red primary color was typical of Calder. Try Stabiles.com for more information. |
